Online
auctions have been gaining in popularity since they were
first introduced, and this increase means better prices
for you as there are more and more sellers bringing their
wares (and discounts) to the web. Concerned about
the security of your transaction? See the section below
for advice concerning auctions and how to protect your
purchase (your cash) once you have discovered the deal of
your dreams.
Government
and Police Auctions Bid on property seized or surplused
by state and federal governments. Home of the $5 VCR (we
know - we bought one).
Seized
Real Estate Auctions Properties and assets sold at 90%
off actual market value.
eBay!
eBay is at the forefront of internet auctions!! Whether
you are searching for antiques or electronics, there is
bound to be something there. Every once in a while, I
realize after I have looked all over town for something
that I can find it in about three minutes on eBay - and
probably a lot cheaper, too. :)
Half.com
Great prices on new AND used books, textbooks, movies, and music from
individuals and companies.
Don't send cash, wire
transfers*, or even checks. Pay for your purchase with a credit card using
PayPal or C2It. If you pay with a credit card, then you may have up to a year,
depending on your credit card company policy, to dispute the transaction. Should
you purchase an item that never arrives or arrives in a condition other than
that specified by your seller, calmly contact him or her first and attempt to
work it out. Should you be unable to do so, attempt to return the item insured
with tracking such as by UPS then dispute your transaction with your credit card
company or PayPal. I have only had to do this once, but my chargeback was
successful. I attempted to work with the merchant on an item I had ordered, and
I did have to show where the item was different than specified. I did not have
to make payments on the balance as long as the items were in dispute.
*Wire
transfers cannot be reversed. Never ever wire money unless
you are willing to risk never seeing your cash again or
having anything to show for it.
Remember, if it seems
too good to be true, it probably is!
